Overview
Located in the Umbria region of Italy, Assisi is a city rich in culture and history and was the birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Gabriel. As much as Assisi is a city of natural beauty, it has also suffered its fair share of tragedy – with the Black Death in 1348 and in September of 1997, two earthquakes brought devastation upon Assisi.
Getting there and around
Driving in any foreign country can be a daunting, if not terrifying experience, and if you don’t have any knowledge of the local language and you lose your way, then things can be even more difficult. Make sure you know the best routes to take before leaving home. If driving to Assisi from Venice, then take the A13 and follow the signs for Assisi. If coming from Rome, take the SS3 and follow the sings for Assisi.

There is no shortage of things to do and see in Assisi, but some of the more well-known places, definitely worth a visit, include; the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi (the church of St. Francis of Assisi) which is also a world heritage site. Construction of the Basilica was completed in 1253 in honour of St. Francis. Assisi is also a great place to visit if you’re looking to soak up some culture – with its array of art galleries and regular festivals throughout the year – Assisi offers something for everyone. And, of course like most places in Italy, Assisi also offers a great selection of dining options and the chance to sample some delicious Italian food and wine.
Parking in Assisi
Don’t let the nightmare of finding somewhere to park during your stay put you off coming to Assisi. If you’re planning on driving here from another part of the country or even if you plan on hiring a car when you get here, there are plenty of easy and affordable options for parking in Assisi like the car park located in Santa Maria Angeli. It always makes sense to do some research before leaving home, just to be prepared, and take the time to check out if your hotel offers a parking facility.
Most hotels do have some kind of option in place, and most are either free or are included in the room price for a small surcharge. In case you are ever unsure, always ask at the hotel or car rental agency for information on car parking facilities. There are many car parks in Assisi check Matteotti Parking Lot (€1.20/hour) , most of which can be used for a few Euros per day. Of course, we are sure you will want to explore this beautiful city by foot as there really isn’t any need for a car – but it still comes in useful in any case. And, of course, if you feel like visiting any of the beautiful sights surrounding Assisi.
