A piece of history that fascinates and entices the senses, Trieste’s Porto Vecchio (Old Port) dates to the XIII century. From this moment, its importance in sea trades grew bigger and bigger.
This port’s expansion came after 1869, when the Suez Canal was first inaugurated. The Porto Vecchio was the first one, of the five areas that compose Trieste’s harbor, to be built: besides this one, the Porto Nuovo (New Port) and the Scalo Legnami make up the trade-dedicated areas, while the industrial terminal and the oil terminal constitute the industrial areas. To get here fast, it is possible to park near Trieste’s Porto Vecchio. Along Via Cavour, Via della Geppa and Via Sant’ Anastasio it is in fact possible to easily find a parking spot. Porto Vecchio is, without a doubt, a place that must be visited on foot. The peace that this place recalls would be ruined if broken by passing cars. To fully enjoy this area that takes back to the past, it’s advisable to park your car and take a walk. During your walk along the Porto Vecchio you may find yourself admiring some small, precious pearls that you wouldn’t be able to see otherwise, such as the picturesque old inn with its grass roof, the number 6 hangar, and the piers. All of this only if this small “forbidden city” were to be opened to the public: in fact, Porto Vecchio has been opened to the public only in August 2011, for the Biennale exposition.
