Piazza di Spagne is one of the most well-known tourist spots in Rome. Located in the centre of the historic Italian capital, this staircase is truly iconic.
It is always lively and is occasionally decorated with colourful flowers during the year. Climbing the stairs is a must if you want to get the full experience. Lower down, at the foot of the staircase, is the Fontana della Barcaccia, a Baroque-style fountain made in the seventeenth century. Here you can even dip your feet in if the weather is right. The stairs head to the church of Trinità dei Monti, dating back to the sixteenth century and known for its Renaissance facade. From its entrance you can truly appreciate the city and all of its characteristic domes, with the spotlight on the Basilica of San Pedro in the Vatican City. This area is easily accessible thanks to the Spagna metro station or the various bus stops located nearby, however the best experience is to be had on foot. You should arrive on Via dei Condotti, the most exclusive street in the capital where all the major national and international brands are found. The neighbourhood that surrounds Piazza di Spagna reflects the more traditional side of Rome, with cobblestone streets where you can wander around, soaking up the Roman culture. Nearby are the Villa Borghese gardens, one of the city’s lungs; and towards the side of the river you will come across the Mausoleum of Augustus. It’s best to explore this area on foot. Parking can be a difficult task, which is why the Villa Borghese Saba car park is a good solution if you are getting around the city by car. Open 24 hours a day, you can be sure to visit the city worry-free.
