The municipality of Trieste is divided in seven precincts, and one of these is the Barriera Vecchia-San Giacomo precinct. To be precise, Barriera Vecchia is one of the most important quarters of Trieste.
This historic precinct is famous because here lived the Irish writer James Joyce, and this has always been the most foreign-populated quarter of the city. Barriera Vecchia didn’t almost change over the years, and it’s still a witness, due to the strong presence of shops and buildings with the traditional architecture, of the strong late-neoclassical artistic presence in Trieste. In this precinct you’ll also find the famous Pirona patisserie, frequently visited by Joyce and other intellectual figures of that period, which is one of the Locali Storici d’Italia (Historical Italian Venues). To get into the singular atmosphere of the Barriera Vecchia quarter, you must leave your car and take a walk: in this case, you’ll find that parking your car is not a problem. Just next to the quarter there’s the Ospedale Maggiore parking lot in Via della Pietà n. 7. By parking near Barriera Vecchia you’ll relieve your tour from the stress relating to parking and you won’t have a single worry, knowing that your car is safe.
