Located in the Marassi neighbourhood, one of the most populous in Genoa, the Luigi Ferraris Stadium represents the living history of Italian sport.
Its unique architecture, which combines the modernity of the newest stadiums with traditions from the past century, makes it truly one-of-a-kind.On the banks of the Bisagno River, the red brick panels of the building’s facade make it really stand out. However, the white roof and the four towers that crown each of its corners are what put the finishing touch on its characteristic look. As the heart of sport in the capital of Liguria, with the capacity for 36,000 people, the facilities have hosted the main team of Genoa’s football matches ever since 1911. Founded in 1893, this is the oldest club in Italy. The field owes its name to one of the team’s historic players who lost his life during World War I.Genoa’s other major team plays at the Sampdoria Stadium. They fight each other for the Derby della Lanterna (in reference to the Lanterna, or the lighthouse of the local port). Seeing a game is the perfect excuse to experience the exciting environment within the stadium, which is always packed for these types of occasions. If it’s not a match day, near the stadium you can find dozens of bars that live and breathe football. Thanks to the network of buses, the area is well-connected and the number of buses increases on the days when the teams are playing. There are no other significant attractions in the surrounding area, however you can always wander throughout the heart of the city where the Genoa locals live.If you are traveling by car, driving can be difficult on game days, especially when it comes to finding parking. The Saba car park on Canevari is one of the best solutions for avoiding any problems, since it is open 24 hours a day.
